Laboratory of Pathomorphological and Cytological Research Methods

The department is located on the 2nd floor of SIS “CIHT” SAD, right wing, Block C. Offices: No. 244, No. 252

Working Hours:

8:00 AM to 3:00 PM (Mon-Fri)

Mazurenko Serhii Mykolaiovych – Head of the Consultative and Diagnostic Center, Head of the Laboratory of Pathomorphological and Cytological Research Methods, Pathologist of the Highest Qualification Category.

The Laboratory of Pathomorphological and Cytological Research Methods is a distinct structural laboratory unit dedicated to the histological and cytological verification of inflammatory and tumor processes in the human body.

Our department focuses on in-vivo diagnosis of pathological processes and diseases. While a clinician can only hypothesize a disease with a degree of probability, the task of the pathologist and cytomorphologist is to accurately identify and name the “disease.”

The pathomorphological diagnosis is the most accurate diagnosis.

Types of Research Performed in Our Laboratory:

  • Pathohistological examination of surgical and biopsy materials of I, II, III, IV, and V categories of complexity (completion time: within 10 working days).
  • Intraoperative Express Examination (completion time: 30-40 minutes).
  • Consultation on histopreparations with committee review (completion time: 1 day).
  • Cytomorphological examination of biological material obtained during gynecological and urological examinations (completion time: 2-3 days).
  • Cytomorphological examination of prostate secretion and seminal fluid (completion time: 2-3 days).
  • Cytomorphological examination of skin surface discharge (completion time: 2-3 days).
  • Cytomorphological examination of aspirates from the breast, knee joint, lymph nodes, and soft tissues (completion time: 2-3 days).
  • Cytomorphological examination of aspirates from thyroid nodules (completion time: 2-3 days).
  • Cytomorphological examination of sputum for AC (Atypical Cells) (completion time: 2-3 days).
  • Cytomorphological examination of cavity fluids for AC (Atypical Cells) (completion time: 2-3 days).
  • Cytomorphological examination of aspirate from the uterine body, prostate secretion, and cervical canal (completion time: 2-3 days).
  • Cytomorphological examination for the detection of parasitic fungi (completion time: 1 day).

The Role of Histological Diagnosis

In most cases, to understand the form of a pathological process, the doctor takes a biopsy—a sample of the pathologically altered organ (larynx, skin, uterine cavity, nasal cavity, cervix, lymph node, etc.). In the histological laboratory, thin sections are obtained from the tissue after appropriate chemical processing and are reviewed under a microscope.

The pathologist and cytomorphologist are the only specialists who can determine whether a seemingly innocent “wart” on the skin is hiding a serious skin cancer, or conversely, reassure patients suspected of having a malignant process that the issue is merely a simple dysfunction of endocrine glands or an inflammatory process.

Depending on our specialists’ findings, patients are recommended individualized treatment.

In addition to biopsy material, all surgical material is examined in the laboratory. Everything removed during surgical interventions—from a microscopic polyp to entire organs (stomach, kidney, thyroid gland, uterus, etc.)—MUST be examined in our laboratory. The pathologist examines the excised organ, takes samples of the pathologically altered areas, and, after microscopic examination, establishes the diagnosis that the clinician uses as the foundation for the patient’s treatment plan.

The submitted material (biopsy samples and excised organs) can be examined within 20-30 minutes (express method), or through the standard procedure (10 working days), depending on its volume and nature.

The results are recorded in a special log and stored in the department for 10 years; glass slides are stored for 3 or 10 years and can be issued upon patient request.

 Cytomorphological Methods

Cytomorphological methods are less labor-intensive but equally important. They are less traumatic for the body (fine-needle aspiration biopsy, imprint smear, etc.) and also indicate pathological changes of various natures occurring in the human body. The completion time is 1-3 working days.

Laboratory Staff

The laboratory’s equipment meets all modern standards, with plans for future upgrades.

Currently, the structural unit has 11 full-time medical personnel positions, including:
